8 Tips for Designing the Perfect Wedding Invitation

Today, I’m giving you 8 tips for designing the perfect wedding invitation, with the help of my favorite invitation company, Basic Invite.

Your wedding invitation is the perfect little preview that your guests will see of your special day, so it’s important that your invitation reflect you as a couple and the vibe of your big day. However, choosing the perfect invitation is no simple task.

Will you be able to find a style and color palette that parallels with your vision?  Do you need an address capturing service? Do you need to add hotel accommodations in the invitation suite?  Do your guests rsvp by mail or online?  Does the invitation need to match the weddings table names, how about the ceremony program template?  Do you need a “details” card enclosed with the invitation?

So many questions and options, right?!  It seems like a daunting task, but just take a deep breath and let the experts at Basic Invite help you out!

Choosing your invitation design.

It’s important to know your wedding style before choosing a design. Will it be formal or casual? Will it be classic, modern, or boho?

Maybe you decide on a theme that is based around your venue.  Or maybe you center your wedding around your shared interests as a couple. Whether you see yourself as a fairytale or a modern bride, take the time to browse through wedding invitation designs to get a sense of what type of invitations fit your style and theme.  The wedding invitation should be a preview of what your guests can expect at your wedding.

For instance, if you have a sleek and modern invitation with foil lining, your guests will assume that it will be a formal event and to dress accordingly.

Choosing your colors.

Basic Invite has (almost) unlimited colors and is one of the few websites that gives you an instant online preview. Once you select a design, you can change the color of each element on the invitation to match your own wedding color scheme. With over 180 colors to choose from, your invitation is sure to be as unique as your wedding.

Don’t forget the envelopes! With over 40 different colors of envelopes to choose from, Basic Invite allows you to customize your invitation suite right down to every tiny detail!  Not to mention, all envelopes are peel and seal so they can be closed quickly and securely.  We love a good time-saver!

Get inspired by your venue.

Your wedding invitation design has the potential to reflect a specific atmosphere.  Embrace the defining characteristics of your venue, thinking about the color and style of the decor. Minimalist invitations are perfect for an industrial venue space, while rustic invitations with floral designs are perfect for a countryside wedding.

Consider the season.

Many times, inspiration can come from the time of year that you are getting married. Wedding venues can look very different from season to season.  For instance, a countryside venue will have a completely different feel in the spring than it will in the winter.  Bright colors and floral designs are perfect for a spring or summer wedding, while cooler color tones best reflect a winter wedding.

Get a wedding invitation sample.

Are you worried that your design and colors won’t match your wedding vision?  Don’t stress!  Basic Invite is one of the few websites that allows you to order a printed sample of your actual invitation before you place your final order. This allows you to see the paper quality and how it will print, and make sure the invitation design is perfect.

Start thinking about your other wedding stationary.

Your wedding invitation needs to bring together all the details and décor that you’ve been working so hard on!  So, what’s the best way to do that?

You can design your weddings table names to match your invitation and bring every little piece together.  Your guests will love going into the reception and seeing their customized place card at their seat.  You are creating an experience for your guests and the details are key!

In addition to the customized placed cards, you’ll need to match your design and color scheme to the ceremony program. After all, this is why we’re here – to celebrate the joining of two people!  Create a ceremony program template that is an extension of your beautiful wedding invitation!

Basic Invite has an impressive selection of ceremony program templates for you to choose from!

Your wedding invitations may be your first piece of wedding stationery, but they aren’t the only item on your checklist.  Although there is no obligation to make sure that everything matches, coordinated wedding stationery does have a true wow factor.  You want to think about the matching place cards/weddings table names and the ceremony program template when designing your wedding invitations.

Consider using an address capturing service.

Basic Invite offers an address capturing service that allows you to share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media to request your friends and family’s addresses. The addresses are stored in your account and can be selected during the design process.  Guess what…Basic Invite also offers recipient address printing at no cost on all card orders.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
